The joke going around banking circles in Windsor is that there is a bank on every corner, according to Signature Bank president Bob Hinderaker. He's not far off. The community of about 14,000 residents is home to 10 banks.

But Hinderaker wants to take it a step further. Technology, coupled with

a relatively recent banking regulation, will help him do it.

"Why not put a bank in everyone's office?" he asked.

Signature is preparing to roll out a service that will do just that for some business customers. The Windsor-based bank is one of several in Northern Colorado that is taking advantage of the Check 21 legislation and technology to enhance its services.

Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act - or Check 21 - went into effect in October 2004. It allows banks to process electronic images of checks, known as image replacement documents, in the same way as paper checks. Not all banks are required to convert their customers' checks to electronic images, but all banks must accept such documents from other institutions.
