Cardiac Science granted United States patents.

Cardiac Science, Inc. (Irvine, CA; 949-474-4300) announced it has been granted two additional United States patents and published an international patent publication, covering technology embodied in its Powerheart Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), its Powerheart CRM and its wearable

defibrillator product, bringing the total of the company's issued patents to 64 and further strengthening its intellectual property portfolio. The United States Patents cover an AED battery status indicator and the remote collection of information from a wearable defibrillator; the international publication extends the protection of the company's proprietary biphasic energy waveform to Europe. Cardiac Science has filed approximately 10 additional patents, which are pending, related to its technology platform and applications in both hospital and public access defibrillator products.

The first patent, United States Patent 6,366,809, "Defibrillator Battery with Memory and Status Indication Gauge," was issued on April 2, 2002. This patent protects the technology associated with the battery life display, allowing responders to quickly surmise the readiness of the unit for operation. The second, United States Patent 6,374,138, issued April 9, 2002, relates to a defibrillator with base station that collects information and sends the information to another location, protects the data analysis and transmission features of the company's wearable defibrillator product, currently under development. The patent publication, WO 02/28479, issued April 11, 2002, "Method and Apparatus for Delivering a Biphasic Defibrillation Pulse with Variable Energy," protects the Companies energy waveform In Europe. This proprietary biphasic waveform is already patented in the United States.

Raymond W. Cohen, President and CEO, said, "Ingenuity and creativity are cornerstones to the Cardiac Science organization and culture, and I could not be more encouraged by the steady growth in our patent portfolio. We clearly intend to aggressively establish intellectual property surrounding each of our products and the important technological inventions that have laid the groundwork for them. In addition, we will not hesitate to assert the protection of these properties through the court system when they are infringed.

"The newly patented technologies related to our AED and wearable products," Cohen added, "affirm our commitment to a growing product offering, further distinguish our product from those of our competitors and indicate our ability to develop products that better serve both trained and lay rescuers as AEDs appropriately become part of the public domain."
