It was a mild September night in Sydney when in 1993 International Olympic Committee President Juan Antonio Samaranch took center stage in Monte Carlo. After a pregnant pause, he announced to the world, "And the winner is Sydney." With those simple words, he had pronounced Australia largest city the site of the 2000 Olympic Games.

A loud cheer erupted from the high-spirited crowds of Australians, who were packing the foreshores of Sydney Harbour. Bottles of champagne erupted and the citizens toasted their good fortune.
