No doubt you've heard about Squidoo by now. Did you know you can get quite a bit of mileage out of it for your home-based business?

In case you're not familiar with Squidoo, the best way I can describe it is: a Web 2.0 page creation site. It allows you to create pages using a combination of various components such as YouTube Videos, Flickr photos, RSS content, link lists, Del.icio.us bookmarks, your own content, and more.

Sign up for Squidoo is free. The pages you create on Squidoo are called lenses. As the name implies, a lens is a web page that focuses on a certain subject matter. Content is added to each lens by way of modules which are the pre-designed elements you can add - the ones mentioned above (although that's not a complete list).

As a home based business you obviously have lots of subjects at your disposal which you are experienced (or gaining experience) in. These subjects could be topics of your Squidoo lenses. A lens should be fairly specific rather than broad. As an example, say you had a drop-ship home business that sold bird houses. You could add a lens for specific types of bird (such as the Purple Martin), you could add a lens about endangered bird species, and you could have a lens about backyard bird habitat tips. The list could go on.

It's OK to have more than one lens on Squidoo; in fact multiple lenses are encouraged. Each lens should be a good balance between your own content and well chosen content from other sources. Here is a lens I set up on one of my favorite topics: eBay Product Sourcing (link here).

Tomorrow we'll have a look at some ways you can leverage Squidoo for your home-based business.

  • Driving Email Engagement with Video

Do you like to watch videos online? You're not alone. According to comScore, the average U.S. Internet user watches 186 videos every month. (Yes, that's every month.) There are 100 million YouTube videos played on mobile devices every day. Video is everywhere. And, video can be added to your email too, to help drive engagement with your subscribers. The caveat is that you don't want to embed the video itself in your message, because many email clients will strip out the code necessary to play the video correctly, resulting in a poor experience for the recipient. But you can easily put a thumbnail image and link to the video for playing.
