KATHY MURDOCK: So as we look at balance, what are some things that you can do to try to balance all of the areas of your life—your work, your family, and your personal space? Well, first of all, always designate a day off. You need to take a day off from work, just to clear your head. So mine is Saturday and I try not to do any work on Saturday. When I usually would work during naptime I try to pick up a nice book or a magazine to read and take some down time during that time. Also, unless its helpful to others, whether you have a friend that’s going to watch your kids one day or you hire someday to come and clean your house, get somebody to come in and help out. It’s one less thing that you need to do and it will give you a little more breathing room in the meantime. Designate a family day as well. Make sure you have a day of the week that you’re spending time with your family, and if you can, make sure that you’re having dinner with your family, because this is really important—it will help you understand why you’re a working mother. Think big when it comes to cooking: make meals on the weekend that will last, that you’ll have leftovers for; freeze foods if you can because that will save some time during the hectic week. Set aside a certain time when you’re doing things such as paying bills, because then you know you’re always going to sit down at that time and you’re going to get everything done. That way you’re not trying to piecemeal it throughout the week because when you try to do something here and there it usually takes a lot longer than if you just sit down and get it done.
