USPS Priority Mail not Priority for Some

Over the course of doing business on the web, our business has received numerous complaints from customers who have had their order shipped via USPS Priority Mail and expect the order to arrive in a day or two. They are then disappointed when it does not. This week for example, we had a customer whose order shipped on Monday from a fulfillment center in New Jersey, but as of Thursday's mail, he had not received it (in North Carolina).

In our experience, Priority Mail is a somewhat irregular service. In some places, it works in the same time framework as UPS and FedEx standard Ground delivery. In other places, it seems to take a lot longer. UPS maintains a Ground Delivery Map where you can clearly see in advance how many days a parcel will take to get from Point A to Point B. I don't know of any such map with the Postal Service and it seems to vary depending on the originating region.

These experiences have prompted us to add a disclaimer to our shipping policy about USPS Priority Mail. Some customers won't read it of course, and we'll then be left to do damage control. But when we are given a "needed by" date by the customer, we will always recommend something more expeditious than Priority Mail.

What about you? Do you have any experience with Priority Mail you care to comment on?

We use Priority Mail for most of our retail shipments. Although most of our east coast customers receive their packages in 2-3 days, midwest and west coast deliveries can take 4-7 days. The situation is complicated by the fact that most customers do not seem to know the difference between priority, express and overnight shipments, and therefore do not know what is reasonable for them to expect. I've had customers from New York City order at 4:00 pm and expect us to get their package on the way that same afternoon for delivery the next day - with no awareness that maybe we don't have the same pickup and dropoff routines here in Appalachia as they do in New York City. And of course, there will always be those customers who want to pay priority rate but receive overnight service. :-) ...

I haven't had an experience with USPS - but I am curious to know how you handle customers calling and complaining about something that is out of your hands? I have been going through a customer service survey with my employees that has seemed to open some eyes about why customer service is so important - but when situations like this arise, could it be a whole new story? Thanks for the discussion!

USPS Priority Mail not Priority for Some
I have mailed to my self from Florida to New Jersey four packages via priority male, it cost me $ 51.80. I told the clerk that I would like to a delivery confirmation for all packages. The Post Office was very busy so she told me that with priority male it is not needed so I complied. After three day I got one package and now 33 days later I'm steel watching for the other three, no site of them.
I called the post office in Florida and I was told that the packages were shipped the next day and I should have received them. I went to the Post office in New Jersey to see if they have them on a shelf, I was told NO. I emailed the Post office and they agreed that I should have received the delivery however I did not. What other step may I take to trace my priority may boxes. Kindly advise. Thank you, Frank.
