What Zoning Laws Apply to a Home-Based Business?

Are you breaking the law simply by starting a home-based business? Cities usually have three types of zones:

  • Industrial
  • Commercial
  • Residential

Some affluent residential zones prohibit all types of commerce, while most allow

small non-polluting businesses that don't effect the neighbors. Research your city's zoning laws, to know if you are in compliance.  Find out which government body maintains your zoning laws and familiarize yourself with them so you will be prepared to deal with any issues that may arise.
