WHILE AN IMPROVING U.S. economy has likely abetted the sales and employment projections among IW/MPI Census plants, don't overlook what

plants are doing on their own to improve their competitive advantage:

* Closer to world-class: 29.8% of plants this year report that they have made "significant progress" toward or "fully achieved" world-class manufacturing status, up from 24.8% identified with the IW/MPI 2003 Census. Last year, 25.9% of plants reported "no progress" toward world-class; this year, only 15.4% of plants report no progress.

* Three-year metric improvements: Many performance measures for plants have increased during the last three years. Plants were asked to report "current" figures and figures "three years ago" for first-pass quality yield (the change per plant was a median 3.5 percentage point increase); on-time delivery (up 5 percentage points); ROIC (up 3 percentage points); and operating equipment efficiency (up 5 percentage points).
