Real electronic trading. (Pacific Rim).

Traders in Singapore will have a new risk-management tool for hedging--or financing, if they trade it well enough--the purchase of their next technology gadget. The Singapore Exchange Ltd. (SGX) will start trading futures on DRAM (dynamic random access memory) chips in early 2003.

DRAM provides for memory demands of a device as it operates. Its volatile price and the size of the industry--the SGX says about $12 billion in DRAM business was done in 2001--should help the contract's chances.

Specifications are subject to regulatory approval, but a contract likely will be denominated in U.S. dollars and represent 10,000 chips, which at current prices would have a market value of around $70,000.
