Tariffs Burden U.S. Manufacturers

I'm sure that I can speak for all of the little metal fabricators, when I say, "Thank you for your article!" ["Steel's Victory Hard To Swallow," July, Page 64.] Within 36 hours of the announcement of the tariffs, I received letters announcing immediate and

continuing price increases on wire, sheet and tubular steel. We don't buy foreign steel. These letters were from American suppliers, taking advantage of the margin created by the tariffs.

For the past couple of years I've invested heavily in lean manufacturing and Six Sigma training for my associates. Demands for lower prices and the desire to be more competitive drove this initiative. Unfortunately, all the waste reduction in the world will not make us competitive with foreign manufacturers, especially now when they have an even greater advantage with lower material costs.

In hindsight, perhaps I should have followed the steel industry's lead and invested in lobbyists rather than training.
