The Arlington, Va.-based organization, which acts as a forum for information sharing and thought leadership on information security issues, announced the availability of its best practices guide at a July press conference.
There the group delivered some alarming statistics. In 2001, 52,000 incidents of attacks or attempts on computer security via the Internet were reported to Carnegie Mellon University's Software Engineering Institute and its CERT Coordination Center, a clearinghouse for such information. For 2002 the number had already reached 46,000 by June 30, said Rich Pethia, director of the Networked Systems Survivability Program at CERT/CC.
