Look Beyond Quarterly Financials

Your observations and comments are spot-on! [Editor's Page, August, Page 7.] I for one am happy to lead a privately held business with co-owners who are not plagued by short-- term financial pressure. Having spent the prior 20 years in public companies, I do

not miss the constant quarterly shift of strategy and vision to find a way to artificially keep the value up despite the distraction to long-term mission and value. Please continue to focus on core, long-term vision and execution.

Trade Policies A Key Factor In Hollowing of U.S. Economy

You mention nothing about what our trade policies have to do with this "hollowing out" phenomenon that threatens all future generations of Americans ["U.S. Headed for `Hollow' Economy," August, Page 80]. General Motors, formerly America's largest employer, would not be the largest domestic employer in Mexico today if they had to pay a hefty tariff to get their cars back into the U.S. Wal-Mart is now the top employer domestically and I do not know if they could support a mobilization should the world need to be bailed out of another World War. In the meantime, hubris and the shallow triumphalism of the oligarchs that run this country prevail.
