ROBOTS

In addition to industrial tasks, a French prototype of a mechanical biped is suggested as a companion for people with reduced mobility. Consisting of two legs and a trunk, the robot has 17 joints with dimensions and movement based on human kinematics and can walk on both a horizontal

and inclined plane. The prototype also can ascend or descend stairs. The research project was coordinated by INRIA, France's National Institute for Research in Information Technology and Automation, and the Laboratory for the Mechanics of Solids at the University of Poitiers. For more information: INRIA's Christine Genest at 011 33 1 39 63 55 18 or the French Technology Press Office via fax at 312/222-1235.
