There's no dearth of talk about the United States becoming a services-oriented nation, but when it comes to identifying companies with the best corporate reputations nationwide, manufacturers reign.

So indicate the findings of a recent corporate-reputation survey conducted by market research

firm Harris Interactive. Eight of the top 10 ranked firms were manufacturers, with health-care products maker Johnson & Johnson topping the list. The two services companies in the top 10 were United Parcel Service of America Inc. and retailer Home Depot.

On a negative note, the majority of people who participated in the survev Dercalved a decline in the reputations of Corporate America, with nearly half (48%) saying it had declined "a lot" in the past year and 31 % saying it had declined "a little."

The survey was conducted between April 2002 and October 2002 via telephone and online interviews in the U.S. Respondents rated companies in several areas, including products and services, social responsibility, financial performance, and vision and leadership.

Finishing in the top 10 were:

1. Johnson & Johnson

2. Harley-Davidson Inc.

3. Coca Cola Co.

4. United Parcel Service America Inc.

5. General Mills Inc.

6. Maytag Corp.

7. Eastman Kodak Co.

8. Home Depot

9. Dell Computer Corp.

10. 3M Co.
