Wanted: Fair Trade

Omitted from the "Unruly Trade" discussion [July 2003, Page 48] was the inflicted costs manufacturing in the United States suffers from our own state and federal governments, and from our legal system. The countless thousands of regulations by OSHA, EPA, DOT, FMLA, ERISA,

and countless filings for state, local and federal tax returns adds significantly to the cost of doing business. Add to this the cost of litigation (including asbestos, product liability and personal injury) and the United States is becoming the most unfriendly and costly place to do business.

If we don't have the persistence and dedication to resolve internal issues (as well as WTO issues), we will only have $7 and $8 [per hour] service jobs (and not as many of them). We will be selling fast food or something from Wal-Mart (a.k.a. "China-Mart"). China's biggest export continues to be UNEMPLOYMENT. Now is the time to act. Do we have the resolve to make it happen?
