Last Time Around: Editor's Note

By Canary, Daniel J
Publication: Western Journal of Communication
Date: Saturday, October 1 2005

I want to make a brief comment regarding my tenure at WJC. The comment is simply that people who submitted, the members of the editorial board, and the external reviewers were amazing in several respects. I will always remember the level of intelligent professionalism that so many people have demonstrated.

Thank you all for making my term easier than imagined.

My predecessor, David Henry, did a remarkable job of retaining the quality of the journal. During my term, the acceptance rate was under 20% (and last year it was only 13%). This low acceptance rate attests to the quality of the journal and its reviewers. Many times, reviewers would offer such advice: 'Dan, this is not up to the quality of WJC; perhaps another journal, but not Western.' I realize this is small consolation for those scholars whose submitted work did not appear during my term. But that is the heart of the matter-it was simply tough to get published in WJC the past three years.

As well, I wish to express my gratitude to the WJC editorial board. These fine scholars were consistently helpful and timely in their assessments of papers. Also, thanks go to my editorial assistants-Mary Claire Morr (Vol. 67) and Melissa Tafoya (Vois. 67-69). Their attention to detail and adaptation to my work style were much appreciated. I would not want to trade places with them! Also, I wish to thank Tara Emmers-Sommer, who edited the special issue earlier this year on non-normative relationships. That issue is quite informative. Finally, I want to thank those who served as members of the Fisher Article Award committee. The Fisher award is presented to the author(s) of the best article for a particular issue. The Fisher Article Award committee members were timely and most helpful.
