special effects (FX)

those visual elements in movies and television such as fog, smoke, lightning, breaking furniture, snow, or the like, that are used to effect reality in the picture or videospace and that are either impossible or impractical to produce firsthand. Special effects also account for those visual elements that are produced electronically and that create an imaginative reality in motion pictures such as Star Wars or the Star Trek series. In television, electronic effects such as dissolves, freeze-frames, montages, and others requiring auxiliary electronic equipment are also categorized as special effects.
