For over 45 years, I have been wrestling with a momentous problem: What must a Jew believe? What can a modern Jew believe? Must a Jew believe anything? There are those who insist, "It really doesn't matter what one believes; what matters is what one does. We must perform the mitzvot irrespective of what we do or do not believe." Indeed, this seems to be the position of halachically oriented Jews who observe Jewish law and pay little heed to the philosophy or theology behind that lifestyle.
