July is going to be hotter than ever for youth in Philly! The Rasheed Wallace Foundation kicks off its fifth annual basketball camp on July 3 at the Simon Gratz High School in North
The two week camp consists of two sessions: the first session runs July 3-7 for children in grades 7 to 9; the second session runs July 10-14 for grades 10 to 12. Led by a group of adult counselors with previous coaching experience, the camp is held Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Lunch is provided daily for participants.
Camp highlights include guest speakers from the sports, entertainment, and corporate arenas, skill building sessions, and the chance to play against Rasheed and his all-star team at the end of each week. "We're still looking for financial, food, and product sponsors," says Joe Watson, managing director of the Rasheed Wallace Foundation. An added feature to this year's camp is the Family Fun Day, which takes place July 15 at Hunting Park. This free picnic, open to camp participants and their parents, will consist of games, food, and prizes.
In addition to providing an alternative activity during the summer months, the camp experience helps youth to develop discipline, good sportsmanship and self-esteem. Pre-registration takes place June 2 at the Mallory Recreation Center (Morton and Johnson Street) from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM., and June 3 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. For directions call (215) 685-2234.
