Dear Editor:
David Saks ("Why Only The Orthodox Can Avoid Intermarriage," Midstream, February/March 2002) argues that "religiously observant Orthodox" Jews are not threatened by intermarriage because they can provide a good reason why a Jewish person should "give up his/her Catholic girlfriend or Episcopalian boyfriend."
Trying to understand assimilation by analyzing only the final act of intermarriage is analogous to trying to understand September 11 th by analyzing only what took place in the moments immediately prior to file awful impacts.
