The foremost fact of 20th century and early 21st century Jewish life is population collapse. This is so despite the re-establishment of a sovereign Jewish state in Israel after a lapse of nearly 2,000 years and the post-World War II flourishing of American Jewry as history's largest, most affluent and influential Diaspora.

After the Holocaust, philosopher Emil Fackenheim propounded his oft-cited "614th commandment": "No posthumous victories to Hitler." It was an early "Jewish continuity" imperative, obligating each Jew to restore and strengthen the Jewish people.
