Showtime
When it premiered, "The L Word" -- the first dramatic series about a community of lesbians -- stirred a modest amount of controversy. Now, as it enters its third season, there is barely a ripple. While loyal viewers will be rewarded for their dedication, there hasn't been much thought given to enticing new fans to this sexy and stylish show. Even the scenes in the "Previously on 'The L Word' " opening segment won't mean a lot to those who haven't followed the show all along.
Performances are as solid and captivating as ever, but story arcs move at a glacial pace. Four episodes into the season, for example, most questions and issues addressed in the season premiere remain unresolved. Will Bette (Jennifer Beals) be approved to adopt the baby of her partner, Tina (Laurel Holloman)? Will Alice (Leisha Hailey) finally get over Dana (Erin Daniels)? Will Shane (Katherine Moennig) and Carmen (Sarah Shahi) reveal their relationship to Carmen's traditional Mexican family? Will Jenny's (Mia Kirshner) new love, Moira (Daniela Sea), ever feel at home with the hip lesbian scene in L.A.? Based on the first three episodes, it might take the whole season -- or longer -- for resolutions.
What this creation of Ilene Chaiken does best is convincingly and honestly portray the variety and texture of the microcosm of society inhabited by her characters. And even if you can't relate to their gender orientation, you're bound to identify with their struggles for happiness and fulfillment.
