Meyjes Plans 'inside' Move

Menno Meyjes, who wrote and directed Lions Gate Films' "Max," is in negotiations to helm his first studio feature, Universal Pictures/Imagine Entertainment's crime thriller "Inside Man."

The project is set during a tense hostage situation at a bank where a tough cop

must match wits with a clever bank robber who sets out to pull off the perfect bank robbery.

The studio picked up the project as a spec script in August from attorney-turned-screenwriter Russell Gewirtz in a deal worth $400,000 against $1 million.

Brian Grazer is producing, with Daniel Rosenberg executive producing. Universal execs Scott Stuber and Donna Langley are overseeing.

Meyjes is an Oscar-nominated screenwriter for his work on "The Color Purple." He made his directorial debut on "Max," which starred John Cusack and Noah Taylor. The film was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the AFI Film Festival. The filmmaker is repped by WMA.
