Seeking a new spin on the video industry's annual convention in July, event organizers are launching the industry's first DVD Festival, including an inaugural DVD Awards program, to be held during the 2000 VSDA Convention & Expo.

The annual convention, to be held

July 8-10 at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas and the Sands Expo Center, typically features video exhibits from major studios and other video suppliers and distributors.

DVD award categories will include best audio commentary, original supplements, widescreen transfer and use of graphics. The awards jury is made up of a panel of industry journalists, including representatives from The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard.

The DVD submission process is still under way, but most major studios and several independent studios are expected to submit titles for consideration.

In addition to the awards, video critic Leonard Maltin is hosting a "DVD SuperSession" on July 9 from 9-11 a.m. featuring a panel of DVD industry experts discussing the future of DVD production.

The newly created DVD Festival, which will occupy a section of the 2000 VSDA Convention & Expo at the Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas, is sponsored by DVD International, Pioneer Entertainment, Image Entertainment, E-Real Biz, Deluxe Video Services and DVD-based magazines Broadcast DVD and DVD Preview.

The annual video convention is produced by the Home Video Entertainment Events, a joint venture between AdvanStar Communications and the VSDA.
