The French government is to make 10 billion francs ($1.3 billion) available in preferential loans to boost the rollout of broadband Internet, with the aim of covering the whole country by 2005, Prime Minister Lionel Jospin said Monday.

Local councils will use the cash

to develop telecommunications networks in areas not already covered. Broadband services via cable or ADSL are so far limited mainly to the major French cities.

The government estimates that investment of some 30 billion francs ($3.9 billion) is needed to provide widespread access to high-speed Internet at two megabits per second.
