NEW YORK -- After four straight weekly wins, ABC's "World News Tonight With Peter Jennings" is in a dead heat with NBC's "Nightly News With Tom Brokaw" in total viewers for the 1998-99 television season.
Nielsen Media Research figures show season to date that "World
News Tonight" is averaging 11 million viewers, and "Nightly News" is averaging 10.95 million. CBS' "Evening News With Dan Rather" is averaging 10.31 million. NBC still leads among adults 25-54, the demographic most important to advertisers who buy news programming, with 4.39 million. ABC is averaging 4.16 million, and CBS is at 3.66 million.
"World News Tonight" has not been No. 1 in total viewers in a TV season since 1995-96. "Nightly News" ended ABC's eight-year run at the top in the 1996-97 season and has since led the evening news ratings race.
However, all the network evening news audiences levels are down from a year ago, as they continue to have the proliferation of cable news outlets chipping away at them. NBC, which has taken a major hit in its primetime ratings this season, is off 9% in total viewers, and CBS is down 8%. ABC has declined the least, dropping only 1%. But "World News Tonight" is off 8% among adults 25-54. CBS and NBC are each down 9% in the demographic.
The impeachment trial of President Clinton may have a role in the evening news viewer malaise. The public is believed to be weary of the story, except for political junkies who can watch on cable outlets such as MSNBC and the Fox News Channel. But NBC and CBS are devoting significant time to the story on their newscasts. It has gotten less attention on ABC, which some TV news executives believe is one reason the newscast has taken the lead in total viewers during the last four weeks.
Last week, "World News Tonight" delivered 11. 8 million viewers and 4.39 million adults 25-54. "Nightly News" was second with 10.93 million viewers and 4.34 million adults 25-54. "Evening News" drew 10.37 million viewers and 3.79 million adults 25-54.
