France Telecom Disconnecting Cable

France Telecom, the nation's largest phone and cable TV company, said Monday that it will sell part of its cable TV network by year's end. The eight prospective buyers include the Canal Plus unit NC Numericable and the Vivendi and Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux companies.

Telecom said it wants to keep those cable units that it operates directly for about 546,000 subscribers, while it plans to sell the network's money-losing portions. Last week, Germany's Deutsche Telekom closed the bidding on nine of its cable companies up for sale because of European Union antitrust concerns (HR 8/23).
