Alex Ben Block, former editor of The Hollywood Reporter, has been named vp and editor-in-chief of eStar, a privately held Silicon Valley-based celebrity Web site set to launch by the end of this year. eStar management said Wednesday that Block, based in Los Angeles, will write columns and stories about
celebrities and shepherd the site's entertainment coverage.
Block said he had stock in the company and "will share in its growth."
Block served as editor of The Hollywood Reporter from 1992 through late 1998, when he left the newspaper to become president of marketing at Morgan Creek Prods. After less than a month there, Block exited abruptly. He has sued Morgan Creek for breach of contract.
Since then, Block was worked as business editor of IF (Independent Film) magazine and boxoffice columnist for the Bridge financial news service. His three decades in journalism include work as a film critic, city editor, show business columnist and sports columnist at the Detroit News, the Miami News and the late Los Angeles Herald Examiner.
Block also was an associate editor at Forbes magazine and is the author of "Outfoxed: Marvin Davis, Barry Diller, Rupert Murdoch and the Inside Story of America's Fourth Television Network," and "The Legend of Bruce Lee," which sold more than 4 million copies in nine international editions.
Block said he expects to make the new Web site "an important gateway to information about stars."
