Shaw Communications Inc., Canada's No. 2 cable company, on Thursday agreed to pay CAN$460 million ($311 million) for New Brunswick cabler Fundy Communications Inc., inheriting 192,000 subscribers and now controlling 97% of the province's cable market.

The transaction

comes on the heels of Calgary, Alberta-based Shaw's deal to purchase 72,500 subscribers in neighboring Nova Scotia for around CAN$167 million ($112.5 million) (HR 3/26).

The Fundy and Nova Scotia deals, both subject to regulatory approval, will create a cluster for Shaw in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia of about 275,000 customers.

The purchase price for the Fundy cable customers includes about CAN$150 million ($101 million) in Class B shares of Shaw.
