Dutch Festival Scores 'chick'

The 18th edition of the Netherlands Film Festival bowed this week in Utrecht with "The 14th Chick," the first feature-length film by young Nazareth-born Hany Abu-Assad, and will close Oct. 2 with "Chased by the Wind," directed by Argentine director Alejandro Agresti.

At Wednesday's opening ceremony, Australian film historian Geoffrey Donaldson was awarded the Golden Calf for Culture for his exhaustive inventory of Dutch films from 1895-1930.

The City of Utrecht Prize was presented to Dylan de Jong for his short TV drama "Venus." The prize is awarded annually to a talented filmmaker at the beginning of his or her career.

On Thursday, the Golden Calf Professional Prize for Editing was awarded to Menno Boerema for his work during the past five years.

Competing for the country's highest film honors -- the Golden Calf awards -- are 124 Dutch films and television drama productions -- more than 70 of which are premiere showings. A total of 307 films will be shown during the festival.

The Golden Calf awards will be presented at the festival's closing ceremony Oct 2.
