Arbitron and VNU have announced a joint agreement to explore a marketing research service studying consumer behavior.

Under the agreement, which is being done in conjunction with Procter and Gamble, a panel of participants will voluntarily carry Arbitron's Personal

People Meter (PPM) to record their media preferences. Data on consumer preferences and purchases would be collected from consumers electronically and via surveys.

The data would be used to understand how media affects the participants' shopping behavior. Arbitron and VNU, which is the parent company of Billboard Radio Monitor, say the service would be separate from any existing TV or radio ratings services.
