IFPI anti-piracy units in Brazil and Paraguay, in conjunction with local authorities, conducted major seizures of counterfeit CDs and DVDs in their respective countries in late January.

In Brazil, authorities seized over half a million CDrs and DVDrs in "Camelodromo,"

an open air market in the city of Campos de Goytacazes, a major point of distribution for pirated product in Brazil. More than 80 people were arrested in the Jan. 24 seizure.

In Paraguay, for the first time ever, authorities raided stands at the infamous "Paseo San Blas," the pedestrian mall located at the foot of the Friendship Bridge that separates Ciudad del Este in Paraguay from the Brazilian border. The site has long been known as a point of sale for pirated product.

In this first anti piracy raid, which took place Jan. 16, Paraguayan police seized over 100,000 Cd and DVDrs. It is estimated that over 1 million counterfeit CDs and DVDs are sold every year in Paraguay alone by street hawkers.
