I figure a lot of working mothers don't have time to read a lot of magazines. But the May issue of Working Mother had a good (meaning informative, well-written, and, yes, short) column on giving effective performance reviews. The column covers preparing for the review, guiding your employee through the process, and the value of "mini reviews" given throughout the year. One of my favorite lines: "Be careful that you don't parent your employees, a potential pitfall for all managers--working mothers or not. Tell yourself that work is work..."
