Video Networking Pioneer Demonstrates Innovations That Herald a New Era in the Personalization of Television Programming

KEYSTONE, Colo. -- BigBand Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:BBND) plans to demonstrate a host of new switched video capabilities in a series of public and private demonstrations at the CableLabs([R]) Summer Conference this week. In private exhibits for operators, BigBand will demonstrate next-generation switched video technology designed to extend its benefits beyond bandwidth savings, and begin to enable new services that weren't previously possible on traditional broadcast networks. BigBand platforms will demonstrate the ability to deliver television commercials to individual viewers and process and deliver Internet video to standard and high-definition televisions. The benefits of BigBand's next-generation functionality include:

* Virtually infinite programming. BigBand's next-generation switched video capabilities are designed to allow operators to support a virtually infinite amount of programming -- including Web content, high-definition and standard definition programming and video-on-demand -- on a finite amount of spectrum.

* Personalization. BigBand will demonstrate the ability to send individual programs and advertisements to users, giving operators the ability to tailor content and advertising packages for individual subscribers. BigBand will also demonstrate the delivery of Web video to the television, which can dramatically expand the library of content available on TV.

* Sustainable Networks. BigBand's next-generation platforms can allow operators to continue to add advanced services, expand video programming or increase downstream speeds for high-speed data services without overhauling their networks to add capacity. BigBand's platforms add intelligence to the network designed to make far more efficient use of last mile hardware resources and leverage software-only upgrades to add new services and dynamically allocate QAMs to different MPEG or IP services.
