EcoSMART[TM], An Organic Plant Oil Pesticide Used by National Pest Control Companies, Eases Burden of Proposed Massachusetts Legislation
BOSTON -- EcoSMART, a plant oil pesticide launching at retail stores in the Boston area this week, kills bugs just as effectively as traditional pesticides registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), without risk to humans, pets, endangered species and the environment. After a 15-year, $15 million investment in research and development, EcoSMART has developed a safe alternative to traditional pesticides that is comprised of food-grade material. EcoSMART, a non-toxic botanical pesticide made from plant oils, has been used by large-scale commercial companies for several years and could easily replace traditional synthetic pesticides.
"Proposed Massachusetts legislation will require the state to substitute 10 problem chemicals used in commerce with safer, feasible alternatives. "With the passage of the bill, businesses would be required to develop plans which substitute a safer alternative, or apply for a waiver showing there is no safer alternative that is technically or economically feasible. A similar phase-out of toxic chemicals by the European Union will require U.S. products to meet additional standards in the coming years. With approximately 40 percent of exports going to Europe, Massachusetts industry must meet EU chemicals regulations. The use of EcoSMART will put businesses ahead of the game that face this challenge head-on by proactively using safe alternatives without waiting on legislation to dictate their choices. "Safer chemicals and safer technologies are out there, and they have been out there for years, and industry has failed to adopt them," said Nicholas Ashford, a technology professor from MIT.
EcoSMART has products for both commercial and consumer use and is now available at select Wal-Mart stores across the country including the greater Boston area. EcoSMART's Flying Insect, Ant & Roach, and Wasp & Hornet Killers--retailing for less than $4 a can--are as effective and as affordable as conventional insecticides but are safe for kids, pets and the environment.
