Coffee Critics Give "Gombe Reserve" High Marks
WATERBURY, Vt. -- Kenneth Davids, editor of the independent Coffee Review, has awarded an outstanding and rare score of 90 to "Gombe Reserve--In Cooperation with the Jane Goodall Institute," a new coffee produced by Green Mountain Coffee Roasters,
At the same time, Gombe Reserve is described in the June, 2007 issue of Wine Spectator as having "a light touch, with a medium roast bringing out pretty, tropical fruit flavors followed by sweet caramel, all borne along by that East African acidity."
Gombe Reserve is the latest addition to Green Mountain Coffee Roasters' line of extremely rare, Special Reserve coffees. In his review, Kenneth Davids describes Gombe Reserve as having "crisp, complex dry berry notes (think blackberries and cedar) with deep, sweet undercurrents of honey and chocolate that emerge with particular clarity as the cup cools."
Like wine, coffee is judged on aroma, acidity, body, flavor and aftertaste on a 100-point scale. Connoisseurs look for a score of 80 or above, and a 90 is considered "outstanding." Coffee Review (www.CoffeeReview.com) is one of the most respected and widely read coffee publications in the world.
The beans for Gombe Reserve are grown by members of the Kalinzi Cooperative, a group of 2,700 small-scale farmers who live near Gombe National Park in Tanzania. The park is the site of Dr. Goodall's groundbreaking research into chimp behavior.
Just outside the park, social and economic pressures are closing in. A burgeoning human population struggling to survive has effectively deforested the land all around Gombe National Park. Trees are cut down for firewood, or to make room for agriculture. The Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) works with villages on community-centered conservation initiatives designed to improve local livelihoods and promote conservation.
Because coffee beans thrive under the shade of a forest canopy, they grow in harmony with the chimp's habitat. Coffee farming gives farmers an incentive to preserve the forest, and a chance to improve their quality of life. With technical and marketing assistance from JGI, the farmers are receiving record prices for their beans.
"Gombe Reserve--In Cooperation with the Jane Goodall Institute" is available on the Web at www.GreenMountainCoffee.com/Gombe. The 12-oz. bag sells for $17.95.
