* The certification of its Brazilian distribution subsidiaries under this international standard marks the culmination of ENDESA's sustainability strategy in the region.
NEW YORK -- ENDESA (NYSE:ELE) announced today that virtually 100% of the activities included in the Company's Strategic
The achievement of this standard comes after the ABNT certifying body's recommendation that ENDESA's Brazilian distribution subsidiary Ampla's Environmental Management System be certified under ISO 14001. This recognition, along with that obtained by the distribution company Coelce last October, represents a landmark in the history of ENDESA's commitment to sustainable development issues. The Company ensures that all its facilities have ongoing improvement plans and programmes, with established objectives and targets, which include staff environmental training programmes, procedures in the event of accidents/incidents and the identification of environmental issues and impacts. Most importantly, these are voluntarily subjected to an external audit system which assesses their correct environmental management.
In addition, all the Company's generation and distribution companies in the region have accepted the seven commitments contained in the Company's 2003-2007 Strategic Plan for the Environment and Sustainable Development (PEMADS), and have defined their sustainability strategy by drawing up their own strategic plans and programmes. These seven commitments, which guide the Company's sustainability strategy, deal with quality of service, the creation of value and profits, health, safety and the personal and professional development of the people who work at ENDESA, good corporate governance and ethical behavior, environmental protection, energy efficiency and the development of the communities where ENDESA operates.
All ENDESA's Latin American subsidiaries have set up Environment and Sustainable Development Committees to meet and monitor these commitments, along with an organization to provide support.
All the companies have also signed up to the Global Compact and drawn up the pertinent reports. Some have gone further, such as Edegel and EEPSA (in Peru), achieving certification for the SA8000 Internal Social Responsibility Standard. The Global Compact is an international initiative promoted by the UN aimed at persuading companies, international workers' organizations, non-governmental organizations and other entities to undertake, adopt, support and promote 10 basic universal principles related to respecting human rights, labour regulations, the environment and the fight against corruption and bribery.
The work carried out by ENDESA's Latin America subsidiaries is reflected and audited through their annual sustainability reports. In addition the subsidiaries have either designed sustainability web sites or are in the process of doing so. All the companies have also accepted the Corporation's standards and procedures, adapting these to specific local conditions and creating new ones based on these conditions.
ENDESA's Strategic Plan for the Environment and Sustainable Development (PEMADS)
The 2003-2007 Strategic Plan for the Environment and Sustainable Development (PEMADS) was designed to face the challenges and make the most of the opportunities deriving from changes to the environmental regulatory framework and the increasing value placed on the company's commitment to a sustainable development model - especially by investors and other stakeholders.
The plan was developed in line with the Company's vision:
* More responsible: building stronger foundations in the societies it operates in and serves, identifying environmental and social responsibilities and acting appropriately.
* More efficient: increasing the value of operations, making rational use of natural resources and minimizing the risks deriving from ever more demanding environmental standards.
* More competitive: making the most of sustainable development opportunities to create lasting value in the company and thus increase its competitive advantage and attractiveness to investors.
