Only 6% value growth despite huge potential

In 2005, sales of cosmetics and toiletries rose by 6% in current value terms in India, riding on the back of the rising aspiration of Indian people to look good and feel good. Rising hygiene and beauty consciousness due to changing demographics and lifestyles, deeper consumer pockets, rising media exposure, greater product choice and wider availability along with retailing and economic developments have all contributed to the rising demand for these offerings.

Growth was, however, held back by still low product awareness or lack of inclination to spend on cosmetics and toiletries especially in rural areas as well as aggressive price competition from local and regional players, which seized volumes with better trade margins and heavily discounted offerings. While toothpaste and bar soap surrendered to consumers downgrading and a host of freebies, talcum powder bowed to shifting consumer preferences to sophisticated whitening products, deodorants and body sprays.
