former managing editor of the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner died March 4 of a heart attack. In 1967, he ran the paper as
managing editor during the American Newspaper Guild strike that lasted
10 years. He became assistant to the
publisher in 1978 until his retirement
in 1982.
