Hollinger earnings rise p.14

Hollinger International Inc., publisher of the Chicago Sun-Times, reported net earnings rose in the fourth quarter and the full year. The increase came even as the company invested in the launch of Canada's National Post and sold several Canadian and U.S. newspapers. Fourth-quarter net income was $20.2

million, up from $15.4 million in the year-ago period, while revenues fell to $578.3 million from $611.6 million. For the year, profits were $197 million, up from $104.5 million in 1997, as revenues fell slightly to $2.2 billion. The company reported slight declines in operating revenues and advertising revenue at its newspapers in 1998.
