Newspaper Ad Expenditures Rise in Q3

Newspaper advertising expenditures for Q3 rose $11.3 billion from the same period last year, a 3.8% increase, according to a report released today by the Newspaper Association of America.

Classified advertising continued to make the most gains, increasing 4.3% to $4

billion. Within classifieds, recruitment advertising rose 15.9% to $1.1 billion. Real estate was up 6.8% to $1.1 billion. Automotive declined 5.6% to $1.2 billion.

National was up 3.9% to $2 billion as was retail, up 3.5% to $5.3 billion.

"The nearly 16% gain in recruitment advertising and the 7% increase in the real estate classified category are particularly encouraging signs of broad economic strength that bode well for the ongoing recovery of newspaper advertising," said John Sturm, CEO of the NAA, in a statement.

The first nine months of the year, ad spending rose 3.8% to $33 billion. Classified increased 5.1% to $11.5 billion. National gained 3.7% to $5.9 billion and retail picked up 2.9% to $15.6 billion.
