Widely syndicated Op-Ed columnist Kathleen Parker will join the Washington Post Writers Group effective July 20.

The Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel writer, whose feature appears in 335 newspapers, is coming to WPWG from Tribune Media Services. TMS has syndicated Parker's often, but not always, conservative commentary since 1995.

"I've had 11 great years with Tribune Media Services and owe them a debt of gratitude," she said in a statement. "Even so, I'm delighted to be joining the WPWG."

Parker (profiled in E&P's August 2004 issue) added: "At a time when mega-media conglomerates struggle to please shareholders in a shifting marketplace, I love that the Writers Group is a journalism-only house where quality journalism IS the bottom line. There are plenty of great writers out there -- and each syndicate has its own unique style -- but the Writers Group is in a class by itself. I know these guys are great editors. We'll soon find out if they have a sense of humor."

Alan Shearer, editorial director and general manager at WPWG, said the syndicate is "delighted" to sign Parker. "She is a polished writer whose perspective on social and political issues will complement a roster that already includes many of the most widely read opinion-page columnists in syndication," he added.

WPWG columnists include Pulitzer Prize winners George Will, David Broder, Jim Hoagland, Charles Krauthammer, and Ellen Goodman, as well as David Ignatius, Ruben Navarrette Jr., E.J. Dionne, and Eugene Robinson, among others.

The award-winning Parker, who's also a contributing commentator for USA Today, began writing her column for the Sentinel in 1987. She has also worked for the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News, The Florida Times-Union of Jacksonville, and other dailies. Her first book, "Save the Males," is scheduled for publication by Random House next year.
