2007 Beard Awards for Journalism Nominees Announced

Nominees for the 2007 Beard Awards for Journalism, which honor the best food writing, were announced this morning.

Newspaper nominees included The Boston Globe (Sheryl Julian), the Chicago Tribune (Carol Mighton Haddix) and the San Francisco Chronicle (Miriam Morgan

and Jon Bonne) for best food section.

For the category of Multi-Media Writing on Food, Beverage, Restaurant or Nutrition, two features from the Chicago Tribune were among the three nominees: William H. Daley's "Winter's Kiss" (12/6/06) and "Mastering Ethiopia's Injera" (3/16/06) by Monica Eng with Chris Brown and Geng Wang.

Nominated for best Newspaper Feature Writing about Restaurants and/or Chefs With or Without Recipes, the nominess are Kate McLaughlin of the Wall Street Journal for "Gourmet Canned Cuisine" (12/2/06); Besha Rodell of Creative Loafing Atlanta for the "2006 Food Issue -- From the Farm to Your Table" (10/12/06); and the Arizona Republic's Barbara Yost for "Bringing A Restaurant to Life" (10/29/06)

One of the main feature writing award nominees is legendary New York Times journalist R. W. "Johnny" Apple, for a feature in Departures magazine called "A Taste of South Africa" (5/06).
