A newspaper deliveryman likely owes his life to several bundles of newspapers stuffed in the cab of his pickup truck, according to an article in the Charleston (W.Va.) Daily Mail.

Billy Poff, who was delivering copies of the Saturday Gazette-Mail at 3:15 a.m. Saturday morning, was involved in a head-on collision with a car going the wrong way on the highway. The bundles, which had 25 newspapers each in them, buffered the impact from the accident and reportedly saved his life.

"I guess it was kind of like an air bag there on the right side," Poff was quoted as saying in the article. While he suffered only minor injuries, the dirver of the other car died in the crash.

"The newspapers are pretty much what saved him," Sgt. Shawn Williams of the Charleston Police Department's traffic division is quoted as saying.

Poff has been delivering newspapers for Charleston Newspapers since January 2003, according to the article.
