So you think your newspaper prints a lot of letters? The Union Leader in Manchester, N.H., announced today that it published more than 5,100 letters to the editor in 2004, breaking a record set almost 30 years ago.

"We know of no other newspaper that is as open to

its readers' views and opinions," said Publisher Joseph W. McQuaid. "Nor do we know of any more interesting and engaging a group of readers."

The newspaper's letters policy has remained essentially the same since it was introduced by William Loeb, the paper's outspoken owner and publisher from 1946 until 1981. Other than limits for length, commercialism and libel, there are few restrictions.

The advent of e-mail and the Internet edition of the newspaper has also contributed to the surge in letters, McQuaid said.
