When Las Vegas Academy is at its best, it's easy to forget you're watching high school students. Jim Leonard's new play "Anatomy of Gray" is a whirlwind fantasy about a girl, June (Molly Bernard), on an 1800s Indiana farm hoping for a miracle to save her poor hometown. In pops a balloonist from the sky

(Donovan Kidd) who says he's also a doctor. Have June's prayers been answered? Everything seems to be going along fine, until a mysterious disease begins to kill off the residents. June is one of the few to survive, and it goes without saying, she learns a thing to two about self-reliance.

Director Glenn Edwards creates a wonderfully whimsical atmosphere, and gets broad yet human performances from his capable actors (the roles are double cast).

The character June is the show's rock and Bernard is up to the challenge. She has a knowing charm beyond her years and the skill to create a three-dimensional character.
