ACCREDITATION
Becoming an Accredited Business Communicator (ABC) is an important step in your professional development. IABC's accreditation program measures your abilities and skills at a critical stage of career growth -- as you move from craft levels into communication management levels. A rigorous testing program identifies and recognizes the well-rounded communicator through written and oral examinations and a portfolio evaluation. "ABC" after your name is a mark of professional achievement and commitment. It demonstrates to fellow communicators, to employers, and, most important, to yourself, that you have attained the skill levels needed.
For more information on the accreditation program, call Rae Hamlin, ABC, (415) 433-3400, ext. 113, or fax (415) 362-8762.

AWARDS
Gold Quill Awards program
The hallmark of excellence in the business communication profession is IABC's Gold Quill. The annual international Gold Quill Awards program honors top work in the field, promotes the highest professional standards, and recognizes outstanding solutions to communication and other management problems. Categories in the competition range from communication programs to audiovisuals, from writing to annual reports.
The deadline for entering the next Gold Quill Awards program is January 27, 1993, for work produced for use in the previous year. The Call for Entries brochure is mailed in the fall of each year. For a list of the 1992 winners, please contact Cheryl Carter at IABC World Headquarters, (415) 433-3400, ext. 104.
Month of Excellence
IABC sponsors the "Month of Excellence," a program conducted in November in conjunction with the Gold Quill Awards competition. During the Month of Excellence, winners of the previous Gold Quill Awards, and other top communication professionals, are available to speak to chapters and meetings on planning and techniques that were successful in entering and winning a Gold Quill Award. This service is available at no cost to chapters. For information, call Cheryl Carter, (415) 433-3400, ext. 104.
The Fellow Award
The Fellow Award is the highest honor IABC bestows upon a member. The award is given to recognize those IABC members who have continually made an outstanding contribution to the communication profession through exemplary achievement within their own organization through unselfish service to IABC members. Excellence in Communication Leadership
The Excellence in Communication Leadership Award (EXCEL) is given by IABC to a non-IABC member who leads the way in fostering -- and participating in -- good communication. EXCEL Award winners support communication and public relations and their organizations reflect that support in their outstanding communicating work. The EXCEL Award is the highest award given to a nonmember, who is frequently a chief executive in a major company. For information, call Cheryl Carter, (415) 433-3400, ext. 104.

Chairman's Award
The Chairman's Award is given to IABC members who have given of their time and talents and have diligently worked behind the scenes for IABC at the international level over a period of at least years. Generally, this will be a contribution that largely has gone unrecognized. Service on the executive board or in any other IABC leadership position will not rule out a candidate for the award, but such service in and of itself will not be a consideration since this service is recognized in other ways. INFORMATION Services
Communication Bank
Communication Bank is IABC's most comprehensive information service. Whatever your communication problem, the Bank is a premier idea source. The handbooks, sample materials, Gold Quill case studies, work plans and videos provide examples and how-tos to help you through all phase of your problem to its solution. And if your research question is outside of information available from Communication Bank materials, the new NEXIS [R] Online Database Service is sure to provide an answer. Communication Bank staff also provides referrals -- to other associations, organizations or contract people who can help.
Here are some of the materials and services available:
NEXIS [R] service: If you need information about a client's business, product line or industry, or tracking market segments or competition, or need to verify facts, the Communication Bank's NEXIS service can help you. Using the NEXIS online database with a worldwide selection of more than 750 newspapers, newswires, periodicals, trade journals and country reports, Communication Bank staff can perform any search specific to meet your needs. IABC offers two ways to use NEXIS:
The IABC/NEXIS [R] member plan: With the IABC/NEXIS member plan, information is delivered to your PC in a fraction of the time takes to collect it manually. This service is exclusive to IABC members at a U.S. $15 per month fee which also applies to hourly search fees.
To sign up, call Mead Data Central direct using the 800 number (800-227-4908). Members sign up as NEXIS subscribes (Mead verifies membership), use their own modems and hardware and do searches themselves. Mead bills directly. The U.S. $15 monthly fee applies to search fees. A custom-designed Turbo program will help IABC members speed up their searches.
NEXIS searches through Communication Bank: Or, a member can call the IABC Communication Bank (415-433-3400, ext. 103) at world headquarters. The bank staff does the search for you, and bills you directly.
By having two options, two types of users are served: one for those who do a lot of searches, and who will use it on a regular basis; and another for those who only want to access the database for a specific project on an occasional basis.
Handbooks: Covering more than 100 topics, IABC handbooks and handbook sets contain information on nearly every aspect of business communication. The handbooks are updated continually; each month the IABC Communication Bank staff reviews more than 1,500 publications, case studies, reports and speeches and adds new information to the handbooks to keep them current.
Sample materials: Whether you're sprucing up you publication's design or want to see the content and approach that other organizations take in their anniversary publications, magazines, newsletters or annual reports, the Communication Bank's sample materials provide a great starting point.
Gold Quill case studies: Organized by communication subject, you may choose from more than 50 recent Gold Quill award-winning case studies. Each case study includes a copy of the entire entry as it was submitted for judging in IABC's worldwide Gold Quill Awards program.
Gold Quill work plans: Gold Quill winners tell all in their work plans that accompanied their Gold Quill entries. You'll learn about the opportunities or challenges they faced, what their goals were, how they implemented their plans, including costs, how they overcame obstacles and how they evaluated the results.
Videos: See sample Gold Quill winning videos in the areas of news programs, benefits communication and external or marketing productions. Video tapes come in 1/2-inch VHS formats.

IABC -- Mission, Purpose and Structure
IABC is the local, national and international information network for communication professionals. IABC is the source you can depend on for topical information, project consultation, management skills -- and career development. No matter where your communication career takes you, IABC is right there with you, through the activities of local chapters, regional districts and the support of the headquarters staff.
The international dimension of IABC is becoming an increasingly valued benefit to individual members. As the world grows closer and organizations' operations and services cross national boundaries, communicators need to better understand the diversity of many cultures.
At the same time, IABC chapters in each country must encompass and reflect the different cultures in their local communicates as they target their communication efforts. Members are learning from each other, and IABC is at the forefront in helping to minimize traditional barriers and to value the many dimensions of diversity through information, networks, education, professional development and research.
IABC's Mission
IABC is dedicated to fostering communication excellence, contributing more effectively to organizational goals worldwide, and being a model of communication effectiveness.
In pursuit of this mission, IABC provides a full range of member services, adheres to sound fiscal and association management policies, and promotes better public understanding and recognition of the value of professional communication.
Structure
There are more than 11,500 IABC members working in over 40 countries throughout the world. IABC is organized into three levels.
1. Chapters
These local organizations have been established by volunteer IABC members in 121 cities in Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Hong Kong, Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, the Philippines, southern Africa, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States. Chapters offer a range of local services, including regular professional development meetings and workshops, member newsletters, awards programs and job placement. Chapters also provide an excellent opportunity for local networking with peers.
2. Districts/regions
Chapters are organized into districts or regions. IABC has 12 districts and regions: seven in the U.S. two in Canada, one covering Europe/Africa, one covering Asia/Pacific and one covering the Americas beyond Canada and the U.S. Districts and regions provide services ranging from management support for chapters to annual conferences and awards programs.
3. International
The International level of the association offers an array of direct services to individual members as well as management support to chapters and districts and regions. At the international level, IABC is managed by an elected volunteer executive board -- which sets the direction and policy of the association -- and is supported by a team of full-time staff members. IABC's governing document is its bylaws -- approved by chapter delegates. A copy of IABC's bylaws can be found on page 62.
IABC maintains a full-time world headquarters office at One Hallidie Plaza, Suite 600, San Francisco, CA 94102, U.S.A Phone (415) 433-3400, Fax: (415) 362-8762.

Twenty-three year later, IABC's membership has grown to more than 11,500 with an annual operating budget of U.S. $3.4 million.
