The Technology Transfer Expo 2006, promoted by the Connecticut Transportation Institute (CTI) and the Connecticut Highway Street Supervisor Association (CHSSA), took place on September 20 at the Depot Campus of the University of Connecticut (UCONN), in Storrs.

For the fifth time in six years,

the event showcased new products and equipment for Connecticut public transportation professionals and their crews. More than 800 visitors viewed static and interactive displays of the latest technology for public works construction and maintenance.

Fifty-plus vendors set up educational booths and demonstrated a broad range of products and equipment to handle the construction, maintenance and operation of roads. Per visitors' requests, vendors were able to arrange equipment demos and new product discussions throughout the day.

An "Expo Challenge" also took place. The challenge consisted of a backhoe contest incorporating safety-related activities, which included OSHA standards, work zone safety requirements and Call Before You Dig regulations. Operators were tested for their safety knowledge as well as agility.

Attendees included Connecticut DOT personnel, municipal department of public works officials, highway department officials, municipal equipment operators, and private construction company managers and workers.

Show planners say the expo serves as a learning and social environment where participants can access information, share best practices and search for the products and services they need to strengthen the infrastructure of the communities they serve.

A hot and cold buffet lunch was available along with tent areas for eating as well as casual meeting space.

The Technology Transfer Center (T2), within CTI on UCONN's Depot Campus, sponsors the event to promote a safe, efficient, environmentally sound transportation system. CTI holds approximately 50 training events with over 2,500 participants yearly to improve the skill and knowledge of local transportation professionals. And the Connecticut Highway Street Supervisor Association (CHSSA) encourages training and leadership for front-line public works employees. With over 140 members, the association holds a number of events including workshops and seminars on a variety of topics of importance.
