There are big changes in store for the long-range, globe-circling Volvo Ocean Race. The 2005-2006 race will be contested in new, state-of-the-art, 70-foot long monohulls. Thus, the door is open to new CFRP composite hull designs. This open design will have a canting keel, a choice of one or two centerboards, and a choice of one or two rudders. The design is expected to be very fast.
Glenn Bourke, CEO of the Volvo Ocean Race, said that the prescribed rule will remain relatively open, presenting a challenge and test for yacht designers.
