Working Moms and Shopping: Where are We Spending Our Money?
How much are working moms spending on shopping, and where is their money going? The answers may surprise you!
43% of the 21.6 million working mothers in the United States hold down a full time job. These women are mainly in their 30s and 40s and more likely to have a college degree.
If you think that we tend to spend money without thinking just because we are bringing in some money, you would be wrong - in fact, 2 out of 3 mothers use coupons monthly and 28% use them weekly (way to go, thrifty moms!)
65% of working moms shopped at Walmart for clothing during the past three months of this study while 53% frequented Target. Only 26% spent their money on clothing at Macy's - which makes me wonder, does this mean we are returning to lower cost items due to the recession?
81% of moms shop Walmart for home accessories, while 40% buy their shoes at the major retail chain.
Working mothers spend about $140 per week on groceries, while the national average falls in the $121 range.
Want to learn more? Check out the study and then tell me where you fall in this study. I can tell you this:
- Our family spends about the same on groceries each week, give or take on different weeks
- We do use coupons for shopping most of the time
- I purchase most of the children's clothes at Target or Penney's and most of mine at Target or Penney's
